Seven (7) Truths to Know about the Battle of Armageddon
The Bible reveals the final battle in which the Lord Jesus Christ and His army will destroy the forces of evil.

What the Battle of Armageddon Is

The Bible defines the Battle of Armageddon as the final conflict in which the Lord Jesus Christ and His army will destroy the forces of evil — represented by the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and their armies. It also bears witness that it is at the conclusion of this battle that the devil, Satan, will be bound for 1,000 years.

Revelation 19:19–21
19And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Revelation 17:14
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Revelation 20:1–2
1And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

Where the Battle of Armageddon Will Begin

The Bible prophesies that it is at Armageddon that the gathering of the nations for the final battle will begin. This conflict will culminate in the Valley of Jehoshaphat — also called the Valley of Judgment, as the Bible teaches us.

Revelation 16:13–14, 16
13And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 16And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Joel 3:2
I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

The term Armageddon comes from the Hebrew Har Megiddo, meaning "Mountain of Megiddo." Geographically, Megiddo is located in northern Israel, in the Jezreel Valley. The Valley of Jehoshaphat, for its part, is situated in Jerusalem — between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. It is easy to understand, then, why the Lord on that day will set His feet upon the Mount of Olives.

Zechariah 14:3–4
3
Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 4And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

When the Battle of Armageddon Will Take Place

Many biblical prophecies announce that the Battle of Armageddon will take place on the great Day of the Lord. This dreadful day is described as a period of darkness and gloom — when the sun darkens at its rising and the moon loses its brightness.

In reality, Armageddon represents the peak of the wrath of God. This is why Revelation associates it with the sixth bowl of divine fury.

Revelation 16:12–14, 16
12And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Zechariah 14:6
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:

Zephaniah 1:14–15
14The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

Which Army Will Fight Alongside the LORD?

Revelation 19:11–19
11And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15-18[…] 19And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

The Bible bears witness that the LORD will not fight the Antichrist and his armies alone — an army of saints will accompany Him. What, then, is this army?

Verse 14 gives us precise identifying marks: it is clothed in fine linen, white and clean. Now, Revelation 19:7–8 reveals that this fine linen symbolizes the righteous deeds of the saints — the Bride of the Lamb. We can therefore conclude that this army is none other than the Church. Revelation 17 further confirms this identity.

Revelation 17:14
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Why the Battle of Armageddon?

Although in the first point we already touched on some of the reasons for the Battle of Armageddon, it serves other fundamental purposes:

To put an end to human rule over the nations and establish the reign of Christ — the Millennium.

Zechariah 14:9
And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Daniel 2:44
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

To ensure the complete restoration of Israel. The Bible bears witness that on that day, the Lord will save the remaining third of the people of Israel.

Zechariah 12:9–10
9And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Zechariah 13:8–9
8And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Is the Battle of Armageddon World War 3?

Biblically, World War 3 corresponds to the event connected to the sixth trumpet detailed in Revelation 9:13–19. This passage prophesies a conflict of unprecedented scale that will mobilize 200 million soldiers and cause the loss of a third of humanity. The Scriptures further specify that this war will begin in the Middle East — river Euphrates.

Revelation 9:13–19
13And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. 16And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. 17And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 18By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 19For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

Is the Battle of Armageddon the Great Tribulation?

The Bible defines the Great Tribulation as a period of intense suffering and persecution — orchestrated by the Antichrist against all who refuse to worship him or his image. It therefore has nothing in common with the Battle of Armageddon, which is a divine judgment. The Great Tribulation is first and foremost a time of trial and persecution of the saints.

Revelation 13:15
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Revelation 13:10
He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
