Truth #1 — What Is the Wrath of God?
The wrath of God is the event by which God will punish the world for its wickedness and the wicked for their iniquity. On that day, God will take vengeance upon those who live in utter ungodliness, upon those who are in rebellion against the truth, upon those who shed innocent blood... For God avenges — He avenges, and will by no means leave the wicked unpunished.
Isaiah 13:9–11
"9Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible."
Revelation 6:15–17
"15And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"
Truth #2 — What Causes the Wrath of God to Fall Upon Men?
There is one thing — and one thing only — that causes the wrath of God to come upon men. That thing is sin. This can be observed in the previous cases of divine wrath throughout history, most notably in the times of Noah and Lot.
Genesis 6:5–8
"5And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD."
Genesis 19:12–13, 24–25
"12And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. [...] 24Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25and he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground."
Truth #3 — For Whom Is the Wrath of God Intended?
According to the Scriptures, the wrath of God is reserved solely for the wicked — that is, for men and women who deliberately choose to live in sin, in rebellion, or in total disobedience toward God. In this sense, no righteous person can ever be subject to the wrath of God. The examples of Noah and Lot help us understand this more clearly.
Ezekiel 14:13–14
"13Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: 14though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD."
Genesis 18:20–33
"20And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; 21I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. 22And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. 23And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? 25That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? 26And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes. [...] 32And he said, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. 33And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place."
Truth #4 — When Will the Wrath of God Take Place?
The wrath of God will occur immediately after the Rapture of the Church — that is, of the righteous — by the Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed, the Church, comprising all the righteous throughout the world, is not appointed unto the wrath of God.
1 Thessalonians 1:10
"And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come."
1 Thessalonians 5:9
"For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."
Truth #5 — How Will the Wrath of God Be Manifested?
Revelation 15:1
"And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God."
With respect to this verse, we can clearly observe that in these last times — that is, after the Rapture — the wrath of God will be manifested through the outpouring of the seven plagues (bowls) held by the seven angels of God.
Revelation 16:1–2
"1And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. 2And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image."
Truth #6 — Will There Be Any Redeemed After the Wrath of God?
According to the Scriptures, the Church — the body of the righteous — will not experience the wrath of God. In this sense, no righteous person will be present during this period of God's wrath to be the object of any redemption whatsoever. Therefore, one cannot speak of Christians being redeemed after the wrath of God.
Luke 13:25–28
"25When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out."
Moreover, the examples of Noah and Lot help us understand clearly that after the fierce wrath of God, there will be no redeemed.
Luke 17:26–29
"26And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all."
Truth #7 — Is the Wrath of God the Same as the Great Tribulation?
Revelation 6:12–17
"12And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; 13and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"
What does this passage tell us? It speaks of the wrath of God and of the signs that will herald or precede this divine wrath. Among these forerunning signs of God's wrath we find: the sun becoming black (darkened), the moon turning as blood, the stars falling from heaven... Let us now turn to Matthew 24:29–31.
Matthew 24:29–31
"29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."
What do we observe? We observe that the forerunning signs of the wrath of God appear here only after the days of distress. Now, as we all know, those days of distress are none other than the days of the Great Tribulation. If, therefore, the signs announcing the wrath of God appear only after the days of the Great Tribulation, this means that the wrath of God is an event that will begin immediately after the great distress — and that it is altogether distinct from the Great Tribulation.
Revelation 14:9–10
"9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb."
We observe once again through this passage that the wrath of God is an event entirely distinct from the Great Tribulation. We read that all those who will worship the beast or receive his mark will drink of the cup of God's wrath — that is, they will experience the wrath of God. Yet, according to the Scriptures (Revelation 13:12, 16), the worship of the beast and the receiving of his mark will only be instituted during the reign of the beast — that is, during the Great Tribulation. We therefore understand that the wrath of God is a distinct event from the Great Tribulation, and that it will come only afterward to punish all those who worshipped the beast or received his mark during the Great Tribulation.
May the Lord bless you!
